Gun Sales
1) Q: What types of shotguns do you make?
A: Purdey builds side by side shotguns on the famous self-opening action patented by Frederick Beesley in 1880.

Our over & under guns are built on the Woodward action patented in 1913. This design incorporates the barrel lumps on either side of the lower barrel which gives a slim, elegant and very strong action.
2) Q:
A:
Do you make single selective trigger?
Purdey does not offer selective triggers as, in our view, these tend to be overly complicated and thus unreliable when fitted to sidelock actions.
3) Q:
A:
What is the delivery time for a new gun made to order?
Between 18 - 24 months. This timeframe is largely dependant on the customer's particular requirements.

Yes, we usually fit Teague chokes as they meet our stringent quality requirements.

A:
When was James Purdey & Sons Ltd Founded?
Circa 1814.
15) Q:
A:
I have a Beesley from Purdey gun, the serial number is #####. Can you give me a history?
Purdey do not hold the records of Beesley guns.

Fredrick Beesley was a former employee of Purdey who set up his own gun making business in 1879. To give credibility to one's business the term “From” and your employer's name was used. This was common practice during this period.
16) Q: I have a William Evans from Purdey, the serial number is ####. Can you give me a history of the gun?
A: Purdey do not hold the records of William Evans guns.

William Evans was a former employee of Purdey who left Purdey in 1871 to work for H J Holland (Holland and Holland) until 1883. It was in 1883 that William Evans set up his own gun making company. In order to give his own brand credibility he used the phrase “From Purdey's”. This was usual practice during this period.

A gun history can be obtained from William Evans.
17) Q: I have a Henry Atkin from Purdey gun, the serial no. is ####. Can you give me a history of the gun?
A: Purdey do not hold the records of Henry Atkin guns.

After working at Purdey for 10 years Henry Atkin moved to William Moore & Co. in 1866, eventually setting up his own gun-making firm in 1877. In order to give his company some credibility he used the phrase 'From Purdey'. This mentioning of your former employer was common practice during this period.

A gun history can be obtained from Atkin, Grant and Lang.
18) Q: Do you use any other wood apart from walnut?
A: Walnut is used because of its unique strength, beauty and light weight.

It also has little tendency to crack due to ageing. Other woods have been tried, particularly Maple and although this can look very attractive it has been found that Maple becomes very brittle as it ages and often cracks.
19) Q: A walnut tree has blown down in the wind, would you be interested in buying it for stock blanks?
A: The wood we use for stock blanks is from the section of the tree where the root joins the trunk. The tree must be felled in sections to reduce the risk of the root ball splitting. A tree that has been blown over will most likely have a damaged root ball and will, therefore, not be suitable for making stock blanks.
20) Q:
A:

Can you give me a market value of my gun?
It is always difficult and often misleading to attempt to value a gun unseen. However, from the serial number of the gun, we can give a very rough guide to a possible range of values.
